Default ANet's inability to restore hacked items

After being hacked once, I have questioned why Anet cannot restore stolen items back to the hacked account. Now before you think I'm whining and crying, I'll tell you that I'm completely over it and have restored my account almost to its former self. Can anyone explain to my why Aet doesn't have the ability to restore items compared to other MMO's such a WoW (only an example, I'm not trying to troll). It sucks having such good and well-deserved items taken away from you in the blink of an eye and not having a chance to do anything about it.

I think this is a good question. I've seen a number of threads about people being hacked since I've been reading this forum and it seems like a lot of the frustration is due to the loss of items that people worked hard to get.

I suspect the answer is because, if they did restore these items, everyone would sell off their stuff and say they got hacked. People respond to incentives, and this would be an incentive to game the system. I don't get the feeling that ArenaNet has the staff on hand to look into each and every hacking to determine whether it was legitimate or not.

That's just my guess.

EDIT: This question was asked during an interview back in 2006. The answer is that Anet does not do individual account backups they do system backups. They can do a restore but that restore would reset all accounts.

This was revealed in the same interview that revealed that Anet used Windows SQL x64 on Win2003 x64 servers, they were also running thier own servers at that time. (Thanks Zaske for correcting me!)
